Networking Matters: Take Time to Refine

With the annual HAI Heli-Expo trade show heading to Atlanta next week it is time to reflect on your approach to networking. In business (and your personal life) networking and building positive relationships are essential to success. In the aviation industry, whether you are a pilot, mechanic, support staff, or part of a leadership team, the connections you make will have a significant impact on your career and what you can contribute to the industry as a whole.

We will spend a few minutes exploring the importance of networking and building positive relationships followed by sharing some ideas about how to do it well.

One of the most significant benefits of networking and building positive relationships is the ability for personal growth and learning. By connecting with others who have more or different experience, you can gain insights into best practices, new technologies, and other important aspects of your industry.

With some effort you may also learn from their successes and mistakes, which can help you avoid making similar errors when faced with similar situations.

Networking provides opportunities for career growth and advancement. Many opportunities are not publicly advertised, and the only way to learn about them is through word of mouth. By building relationships with people in the industry, you increase your chances of hearing about new opportunities and being considered for them.

Another benefit of networking is that it can lead to partnerships and collaborations. The helicopter industry is highly specialized, and many companies and individuals rely on others to provide services they cannot perform themselves. By building relationships with others in the industry, you can identify potential partners or collaborators and work together to provide comprehensive services to clients.

Everyone benefits from collaboration.

In addition to these practical benefits, networking and building positive relationships can also provide channels for personal and professional support. Our industry is stressful and demanding, and having a network of supportive colleagues may help you navigate challenges and maintain a healthy work-life balance. You can also gain mentorship and guidance from those who have been in the industry for longer and are willing to offer advice and support.

How do you go about networking and building positive relationships?

  1. Attend industry events: Industry events, such as trade shows, conferences, and networking events, provide opportunities to connect with others with like interests. Try to attend these events and introduce yourself to others. Openly share your contact information and be sure to follow up after the event with those you met.

  2. Join professional organizations: Joining a professional organization provides access to a network of individuals with similar interests and goals. Many organizations offer networking events, educational opportunities, and other resources to help members connect and grow within the industry.

  3. Utilize social media: Social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, can be powerful tools for networking. Connect with others in the industry and participate in online discussions and groups. Share relevant content and engage with others to build relationships and establish yourself as a thought leader.

  4. Volunteer: Volunteering for industry organizations and events can provide opportunities to meet and work with others in the industry. It can also demonstrate your commitment to the industry and your willingness to contribute to its success.

  5. Follow up: Building relationships takes time and effort. Try to follow up with those you meet and continue to stay in touch. Send an email or connect on social media to keep the conversation going and maintain the relationship.

Networking and building positive relationships are essential to success so keep adding to your network while working to maintain the relationships that are already in it.
